Food markets are something that I’ve discovered and grown to love through my travels. A trip is not complete without visiting the local night market or farmer’s market. South Africa in particular, spoilt me for choice with her markets. Kenya is still growing in that regard, but there are more and more markets popping up in suburbs and even market events.
The Nairobi Food Market is one such event that I visited two weeks ago. Only its second edition, there is evident potential. It boasted quality vendors, albeit few. There were cheese stands, boozy stands, honey and nut butters, coffee and tea vendors, a Japanese restaurant and a gelato and sorbet seller. The venue was the leafy Nairobi Arboretum.
There was a film screening that I missed in the morning, and a pub quiz that evening. The afternoon was for exploring stands, and there was an interview conducted with the Nyama Mama Express founder and chief chef (which I didn’t listen to because I was too busy taking ‘polaroid’ pictures with my sister! See vlog). The live music was the cherry on top for me. The band was really good.
The one thing I didn’t particularly enjoy was that the event was in a tent. I understand that it catered for the eventuality of rain, but it really detracted from the market vibe. Nonetheless, it was a fun-filled day, and I would totally attend their next edition.
